What to expect at your first visit, and our appointment and cancellation policies for the medical and cosmetic clinics.

What to Expect at Your First Appointment

Please arrive 5-10 minutes prior to your appointment to check in at the reception desk.
Please bring your valid OHIP card, failure to do so will result in a $100 fee.
During your initial appointment your specialist will address your referral concerns and discuss treatment options. If a biopsy or procedure is required, you will be asked to schedule a procedure appointment within the timeframe specified by your specialist.

Medical Clinic Appointment Policy

We kindly ask that you provide at least 48 hours’ notice for any appointment cancellations, rescheduling requests, or same-day changes, either by phone or through the appointment reminder system. Failure to provide sufficient notice will result in a $100 fee for OHIP-covered appointments.

Please be advised, if you are late for your appointment, you may be asked to reschedule.

Medical Clinic OHIP Policy

Please bring your valid green OHIP card to your appointment. Failure to do so will result in a $100 charge.

Cosmetic Clinic Appointment Policy

We ask that you provide no less than 48 hours’ notice to cancel or change an appointment by email to aesthetics@yorkderm.ca.

Failure to do so will result in the following fee schedule:

1st time: $100 fee
2nd time: $100 fee for appointments less than 30 minutes, or 50% of the cost of their treatment for appointments longer than 30 minutes.
3rd time: The full cost of the treatment must be prepaid before the appointment is scheduled. Failure to attend a prepaid appointment will result in forfeiture of the prepaid amount for the loss of cosmetic revenue and loss of time.

Please be advised, if you are late for your appointment, it may need to be rescheduled or abbreviated, and a $100 fee will apply.

Procedure Care Instructions

Before and after care for biopsies, surgical procedures, cryotherapy, deroofing and electrocautery. If you notice signs of infection, call us at (905) 883-7997 to book an assessment with the nursing team.

Biopsy and Surgical Procedures

Proper post-operative care is essential to ensure optimal healing and to prevent infection.

Before your appointment:
DO NOT stop Warfarin (Coumadin) or Aspirin unless told to do so by your Dermatologist.

After your appointment:

Apply Vaseline or Fucidin Ointment to the area and over stitches 2-3 times per day. Keep the area clean and continue to apply the ointment until the wound is fully healed. DO NOT use Polysporin or Peroxide as these can irritate the skin and prevent healing.
Cover the area with a bandage or dressing as directed by your doctor.
Showers are encouraged. Please avoid dirty water (eg. bathtubs, hot tubs, pools, lakes, and oceans).
Avoid exposing the area to the sun. Once the wound has healed, apply SPF 30 or higher to reduce the risk of discolouration.
DO NOT perform strenuous activities (lifting, vigorous exercise, etc) for 7-14 days post-procedure, as instructed by your specialist.
You may experience some discomfort at the procedure site. Over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen (Tylenol) can help alleviate the pain. Avoid non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) as they can increase the risk of bleeding. Ice packs can help reduce swelling, bruising, and pain.
Stitches are typically removed after 5-7 days on the face and 7-14 days on the body.
It is the responsibility of the patient to book their appointments for suture removal and result review. If a sample was sent to the pathology lab, schedule your follow-up appointment to discuss your results 6 weeks post-procedure unless otherwise instructed by your specialist.
Once the wound has closed, silicone gels or sheets, Cicaplast Baume, or CytoDerma Advanced Scar Gel can be applied daily to minimize scarring.

Watch for signs of infection, including:

Increased redness or swelling around the procedure site (if there are stitches, it is normal for the area around them to become pink)
Pus or drainage
Fever
Increased pain that is not relieved by pain medication

In the event of complications:

BLEEDING: Apply pressure on the wound firmly and continuously for 10 minutes using clean gauze. Contact your dermatologist if the bleeding continues.
WOUND DEHISCENCE: This is a gaping opening of the wound due to broken or loose sutures. Only a wound of more than 2cm will require restitching.

Cryotherapy (Liquid Nitrogen)

After your treatment:

Gently wash the area daily with mild soap.
Apply a layer of Vaseline to the wound daily until fully healed (usually 2-6 weeks).
After treatment you may experience pain, redness, crusting, and scabbing, and/or blistering. In some cases, large yellow and/or large blood blisters may form.
Infection is uncommon, but if you have any signs of infection such as fever, severe pain, and/or pus you may require topical and/or oral antibiotics. Please contact our office immediately at 905-883-7997 to book an assessment with the nursing team.
It is common for some lesions to require repeat treatments.
The lesion may shrink and/or fall off, this usually takes a few days to a few weeks. *Avoid certain cosmetic treatments such as laser and chemical peels for 1 month.
The treatment area may have permanent discolouration or scarring. Ensure the area is protected from sun/UV exposure to minimize scarring.

Deroofing

If you’ve had a Deroofing Procedure

The wound will be left open to heal naturally (by secondary intention). Some blood on the dressing is normal. If this occurs, apply another dressing on top and apply pressure for 15 minutes. If excessive bleeding occurs that persists after 15 minutes of continuous pressure, contact our office immediately at 905-883-7997 to book an assessment with the nursing team.
Avoid getting the dressing wet and keep the dressing on the wound for at least 24 hours.
After the first 24 hours, change the dressing daily until the wound is healed.
Acetaminophen (Tylenol) can be used for pain management. Avoid aspirin or ibuprofen
(Advil, Motrin) as they can increase the risk of bleeding.
Ice packs can help reduce swelling, bruising, and pain. Use 15 minutes on then 15 minutes off for the first 2 days after your procedure.
Be sure to get lots of rest.

Electrocautery

After your treatment:

CO2 Laser Treatment

CO2 Laser Treatment is an advanced procedure that resurfaces the skin. This technique works by removing the outer layers of damaged skin while stimulating collagen production in the deeper layers, promoting smoother and tighter skin. CO2 lasers are particularly effective for treating conditions such as acne scars, wrinkles, age spots, and sun damage. Multiple treatments may be required to achieve optimal results. Failure to adhere to the treatment protocols may result in a sub-optimal treatment outcome.

Before Your Appointment

Do not wear makeup on the day of treatment.
Ensure that the treatment area is clean-shaven.
No sun-tanning or self-tanners 4 weeks prior to treatment. This includes spray tans, tanning lotions, tanning beds, and sun exposure.
Ensure daily use of broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) SPF 30 block or higher.

Avoid skin irritants (examples below) for 5 days before treatment:

Products containing tretinoin, retinol, benzoyl peroxide, glycolic/salicylic acids, vitamin C/ascorbic acid, astringents, etc.

If you have a history of herpes or cold sores, you may require an anti-viral prescription prior to treatment.
Stop Accutane/Epuris for 6 months before treatment.
Notify the clinic of any changes to your health history or medications since your last appointment.

After Your Appointment

Do not wash your face for at least 6-8 hours post-treatment.
Wash and pat dry the skin gently twice a day until the crusting naturally exfoliates/sloughs off.
Apply a mild/non-fragrant moisturizing cream to the treatment area twice a day for 2 weeks or until the area is fully healed.
A visible fine scab or crusting will develop 3 to 5 days after your treatment. Do not remove it forcibly or scratch it.
You may feel redness, dryness, swelling, and some pain for 2 to 3 days.
Apply sunblock every 3 to 4 hours for a minimum of 2 weeks to a month after your procedure to help prevent UV-induced pigmentation.
Do not wear a facemask until the fine scabbing/crusting has exfoliated or sloughed off (up to 5 days).

Avoid skin irritants (examples below) for 7-10 days after treatment:

Products containing tretinoin, retinol, benzoyl peroxide, glycolic/salicylic acids, vitamin C/ascorbic acid, astringents, etc.

Avoid sauna and aggressive exercises for 1-2 weeks.
Optional: To keep your skin cool and moisturized, spray with cold water during the healing process.
Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water.
Multiple treatments may be required.
Notify the clinic of any concerns (blistering, excessive redness/swelling, persistent grid pattern, etc.).
Consult with the clinic about when to resume your skincare regimen.

Fillers

Fillers are used for the purpose of rejuvenation, wrinkle reduction, restore volume loss, and balance features.

Before your appointment:

One Week Prior to Injection

Avoid over-the-counter medications such as Aspirin, Motrin, Ibuprofen, and Aleve.
Avoid supplements, including St. John’s Wort, Gingko Biloba, Primrose Oil, Garlic, Ginseng, and Vitamin E.

2 Days Prior to Injection

Avoid topical products such as Tretinoin (Retin-A), Retinol, Retinoids, Glycolic Acid, or any “anti-aging” products.
Avoid waxing, bleaching, tweezing, or using hair removal cream on the area to be treated.

24 Hours Prior to injection

Do not drink alcoholic beverages 24 hours prior.
The Day of Treatment
Arrive at the office with a clean face, washed, and without makeup.
Important!
If you have previously suffered from facial cold sores, there is a risk that the needle punctures could contribute to another eruption of cold sores. Please let your nurse know if you are prone so that we may further assist you during the healing period after your treatment.
Do not use dermal fillers if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, are allergic to any ingredients, or suffer from neurological disorders. Please let us know if you have any questions about this prior to your treatment.

After your appointment:

Temporary redness and swelling at the injection site can occur.
Until the redness and swelling has resolved, avoid exposure of the area to intense heat (sun, hot tub or sauna) for 72 hours.
Do not sleep on the treated area (try to sleep on back for 4 days).
Avoid strenuous exercise for 12 hours.
Avoid consuming excess amounts of alcohol to avoid bruising.
Avoid food high in salt to avoid excess swelling.
If you experience swelling; apply ice pack for 15 minutes.
Wait a minimum of 1 week for any facials.
Wait a minimum of 4 weeks for any laser treatments.
Advise your provider should you experience a cold sore. Valtrex may be prescribed, if appropriate.
Avoid taking Aspirin, NSAIDs, St. John’s Wort, Omegas or high doses of Vitamin E supplements prior to treatment.
Call your provider should you have any questions.

Laser Genesis/Green Genesis

Laser Genesis and Green Genesis are advanced laser treatments designed to improve skin tone and texture through non-invasive techniques. Laser Genesis uses a non-ablative infrared laser to stimulate collagen production, effectively reducing fine lines, texture, and redness while promoting an even skin tone. This gentle procedure requires no downtime, making it suitable for various skin types and a popular choice for those seeking subtle rejuvenation. Green Genesis targets vascular lesions and redness, such as rosacea or broken capillaries. The green light helps to diminish these imperfections while enhancing overall skin clarity. Both treatments are safe, quick, and typically involve minimal discomfort. Multiple treatments are required to achieve optimal results. Laser Hair Reduction

Laser hair reduction is a popular cosmetic procedure that targets and eliminates unwanted hair. The process damages the hair follicle which inhibits future hair growth. It is most effective on individuals with dark hair. Treatments are typically quick and can be performed in various areas of the body. Multiple treatments are necessary to achieve long-term reduction of hair growth. Complete clearance is not guaranteed as factors including genetics, hormones, and medications may interfere with the treatment. Failure to adhere to the treatment schedule and protocols may result in a sub-optimal treatment outcome.

Before your appointment

Do not wax, pluck or remove the hair in any way other than shaving
Ensure the area is clean and shave on the day of your appointment
Ensure the area is free of makeup and lotions

Neuromodulator (Botox & Dysport)

Neuromodulator treatment is a popular cosmetic procedure used to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by temporarily relaxing facial muscles. By blocking signals from nerves to specific muscles, neuromodulators help prevent contractions that lead to dynamic wrinkles, particularly on the forehead, around the eyes (crow’s feet), and between the eyebrows (frown lines, angry 11s). The procedure is quick, typically taking just a few minutes, and requires little to no downtime, allowing patients to resume their normal activities shortly afterwards. Results usually become visible within two weeks and can last three to six months, after which maintenance treatments are recommended.

Before your appointment

Avoid anti-inflammatory medications and blood thinners such as Aspirin, Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), and other NSAIDs for 2 days prior to treatment if possible.
Schedule your appointment at least 2 weeks prior to a special event as results may take 7-14 days to take effect.
Discontinue Retin-A/Retinol 2 days prior to treatment (can resume 2 days after treatment).
If you have a history of cold sores/herpes simplex virus, please let your provider know. An anti-viral medication may be prescribed prior to treatment.

The day of your appointment

Have a good breakfast and ensure you are hydrated before your procedure.
Please arrive without any cream or make-up in the treatment area.
Pre-treatment photos will be taken.

After your appointment

Pinpoint bleeding may occur and will resolve quickly.
Mild bruising and/or sensitivity may develop around the injection site. This will resolve within 7-10 days post treatment.
DO NOT manipulate the treated area and DO NOT lie down for 4-6 hours following the treatment.
DO NOT perform strenuous activities (lifting, vigorous exercise, etc.) for 24 hours post treatment.
Avoid hot showers, hot tubs, saunas, and swimming pools for 24 hours post treatment.
DO NOT receive facial, laser, or other cosmetic treatments for at least 14 days after injections. Ask your provider if you are unsure of timeframes.
Schedule a follow-up 2 weeks post treatment.
The injected area may feel ‘lumpy’ for a few hours post injection; if prolonged lumps occur, contact the clinic to schedule a follow-up.
If you experience any prolonged symptoms or an increase in discomfort, contact the clinic for immediate follow-up.

Pigmented and/or Vascular Lesions Treatment

Multiple treatments are required to achieve optimal results. Failure to adhere to the treatment protocols may result in a sub-optimal treatment outcome.

Before your appointment

Ensure that the treatment area is clean-shaven
Ensure the area is free of makeup and lotions
No sun-tanning or self-tanners 4 weeks prior to treatment *Includes spray tans, tanning lotions, tanning beds, sun exposure, etc.
Ensure daily use of broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) SPF 30 block or higher
Avoid anticoagulants for 7 days before treatment if medically permitted.

Avoid skin irritants 5 days before treatment:

Example: products containing tretinoin, retinol, benzoyl peroxide, glycolic/salicylic acids, vitamin C/ascorbic acid, astringents, etc.

Stop hydroquinone 7 days before treatment
Avoid chemical peels 2 weeks before treatment

After your appointment

Treated pigment : will become darker (brown to black) within 24-48 hours
- Do not pick at the treated areas
- Treated pigment will exfoliate off the face in approximately 1 week
- Treated pigment will exfoliate off the body in approximately 2-3 weeks
Leg Vein Treatments only:
- Compression stocking (20-30 mm/hg) are optional
- Avoid high impact activity for 3-5 days
- Hemosiderin staining may occur and usually resolves with time (up to 1-2 years) but, on a rare occasion, may be permanent

RF Microneedling

RF Microneedling is a cutting-edge cosmetic treatment that combines traditional microneedling with radio frequency energy to enhance skin rejuvenation. During the procedure, fine needles create micro-injuries in the skin, while simultaneously delivering radio frequency energy to stimulate collagen and elastin production in the deeper layers. This dual-action approach helps to improve skin texture, reduce fine lines, and tighten sagging skin. RF microneedling is particularly effective for treating acne scars, enlarged pores, and overall skin laxity. Avoid skin irritants for 5 days before and after treatment:
- Examples: products containing tretinoin, retinol, benzoyl peroxide, glycolic/salicylic acids, vitamin C/ascorbic acid, astringents, etc.
Bruising, redness, swelling, or a grid pattern may occur and will resolve with time. More aggressive treatments or use of irritants in the days prior to or after treatment can lead to longer downtime.
Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water.
Multiple treatments are required.
Notify the clinic of any concerns, such as blistering, excessive redness/swelling, or a persistent grid pattern.
Consult with the clinic about when to resume your skincare regimen.

PRP/PRF

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) is a targeted, non-surgical treatment that uses your own platelet-rich plasma to stimulate hair follicles, encourage natural growth and slow down hair loss.

PRP/PRF

Before your appointment:

Inform your provider if you

Have used isotretinoin (Accutane, Epuris, etc.) within the last 6-12 months
Have had recent facial surgery or procedures
Have an autoimmune disease or chronic skin condition
Have a bacterial or viral infection, open wounds, or active cold sores
Have a history of keloids or poor wound healing
Have had recent teeth cleaning or dental treatment
Are pregnant or breastfeeding
Have a recent tattoo
Have had a recent immunization

1 week before your appointment

Discontinue supplements such as vitamin E, vitamin A, Ginko, Garlic, Flax, Cod Liver Oil, and Essential Fatty Acids, and multivitamins. Iron and vitamin D do not need to be discontinued.
If you are taking any blood thinners, please let your provider know immediately, as they may represent a contraindication to this treatment. These medications include Plavix, Coumadin and Heparin.

Avoid colouring your hair the week before your appointment.

3 days before your appointment

Refrain from, or minimize, alcohol consumption.
Refrain from, or minimize, smoking as this can impact the healing process.
Avoid aspirin, Advil, Motrin, Ibuprofen, Naproxen, Voltaren and other anti-inflammatory medications.

24 hours before your appointment

Increase water consumption

The day of your appointment

Ensure you have a proper breakfast on the day of your appointment.
Allow approximately 60 minutes for your appointment.
Pre-Treatment photos will be taken.

PRP

Wash your hair before your appointment and ensure the treatment area is free of styling products.
If you wear a hair system, please remove it prior to shampooing and do not wear it before your PRP treatments.

PRF

Ensure the treatment area is free of make-up before you arrive at your appointment.

After your appointment:

Do not touch, press, rub or manipulate the treated area(s) for at least 8 hours after your treatment.
Avoid Advil, Aleve, Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Motrin, Naproxen, (all non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications/NSAIDs), Vitamin A, Vitamin E, Gingko Biloba, Garlic, Flax Oil, Cod Liver, Essential Fatty Acids (EPA, DHA), for at least 1 week prior to and 2 weeks after your treatment. The goal is to create inflammation, and these listed medications and supplements will limit or prevent inflammation, which can diminish your results. If you must take Aspirin for cardiac reasons, you certainly may do so, but this may limit your results.
Avoid applying ice to the injected area as ice acts as an anti-inflammatory.
It is normal to experience bruising, redness, itching, swelling, and/or soreness that may last from 2-5 days following your procedure. If you experience any pain or discomfort, you may take Tylenol or other Acetaminophen-containing products as directed.
Avoid saunas, steam rooms, and swimming for 2 days after your treatment.
Avoid vigorous exercise, sun, and heat exposure for at least 2 days after your treatment.
Avoid alcohol, caffeine, and cigarettes for 3 days after treatment. Smoking affects the healing process and may affect results.

PRP only

Do not wet your hair for at least 3 hours after your treatment.
Do not use any hair products for at least 6 hours after your treatment.
For the first 3 days after your treatment, use a shampoo that is pH balanced.
Avoid using Minoxidil (Formula 82M, Rogaine®) unless instructed by your physician.
Avoid hair colouring or straightening for 3 days.
Increase your water intake the first week after your treatment.
