Overview

Understanding Rosacea / Telangiectasia

Looking for broken capillaries treatment in Richmond Hill? We use IPL and vascular laser to calm redness and clear broken capillaries, alongside medical rosacea care.

Rosacea is a long-term skin condition that causes flushing, persistent redness and visible blood vessels (telangiectasia). Medicine can calm flare-ups, but visible vessels and background redness often stay.

Light and laser treatments target those vessels directly. As a medical dermatology clinic, we can treat both the condition and the redness it leaves.

Rosacea care combines our medical dermatology service with cosmetic treatments. IPL and Green Genesis reduce redness and visible vessels; larger leg or facial vessels may need our spider vein treatment. For brown spots alongside redness, see sun damage treatment; red birthmarks are covered under birthmark laser treatment.

What To Expect From Rosacea & Redness

Who it suits, how to prepare, what happens on the day and how results develop.

A good fit if:

  • You have redness or visible vessels that medicine has not cleared
  • You have lighter to medium skin
  • You can avoid sun before and after

Talk to us first if:

  • You have a current flare (we calm it first)
  • You have a tan
  • You are pregnant
  • We review your rosacea, triggers and current treatment; an active flare is calmed first.
  • No sun-tanning or self-tanners for 4 weeks before treatment, including spray tans, tanning lotions and tanning beds.
  • Use a broad-spectrum (UVA/UVB) SPF 30 or higher every day.
  • Avoid skin irritants such as tretinoin, retinol, benzoyl peroxide, glycolic or salicylic acids and vitamin C for 5 days before treatment, and stop hydroquinone 7 days before.
  • Avoid chemical peels for 2 weeks before treatment, and stop Accutane/Epuris 6 months before.
  • Tell us if you have a history of cold sores; an anti-viral medication may be prescribed.
  • Arrive with the area clean and free of makeup and lotions.

Treatment feels like warm snaps and takes about 20–30 minutes. Settings are matched to your skin and the vessels being treated.

  • Skin may be flushed for a few hours; some vessels look darker before fading.
  • Redness is common and usually resolves within 24 hours.
  • Avoid heat for 24–48 hours, including hot tubs, saunas, hot baths or showers and strenuous exercise.
  • Treated skin is sensitive to the sun: avoid sun exposure and tanning, and use SPF 30 or higher daily.
  • Use a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser and avoid skin irritants for 5 days.
  • Blistering is rare; if it happens, apply a thin layer of Vaseline 2–3 times a day for a week and let us know.
  • Consultation: flare calmed; triggers reviewed.
  • Day 0: flushing for a few hours.
  • Weeks 3–4: next session; redness reduces.
  • After series: clearer skin; maintenance as needed.

Most patients notice a clear difference after a short series. Rosacea is long-term, so occasional maintenance and trigger management help keep results.

  • Flushing and mild swelling for a few hours
  • Temporary darkening of treated vessels
  • Rare: blistering or pigment change

We go through the risks for your skin type at your consultation.

Laser and IPL reduce redness and visible vessels but do not cure rosacea. Medical care and trigger management are still important.

Most people need a short series, usually 3 to 5 sessions spaced about 3 to 4 weeks apart. Your plan depends on how much redness and how many vessels you have.

There is little to no downtime. Skin may look flushed or slightly swollen for a few hours, and some vessels can look darker before they fade.

Treated vessels usually fade, but rosacea is long-term and new redness can appear over time. Occasional maintenance sessions and managing your triggers help keep results.

Yes. As a medical dermatology clinic, we can manage rosacea flare-ups with medical treatment as well as treat the redness and vessels it leaves behind.

Treatment is priced per session based on the area treated and the number of sessions. We confirm pricing at your consultation and give you a written plan and quote before treatment. Cosmetic treatments are not covered by OHIP.

Medical rosacea visits with a dermatologist may be covered by OHIP with a referral. Cosmetic light and laser treatments for redness are not covered by OHIP.

Common triggers include sun, heat, alcohol, spicy foods, hot drinks, stress and some skincare products. Triggers vary from person to person, and we help you identify yours.

Light and laser treatments for redness are best suited to lighter to medium skin, as darker skin has a higher risk of pigment change. Your options, including medical treatment, are assessed at your consultation.

Laser and IPL mainly target redness and visible vessels. Bumps and pimples from rosacea are usually treated medically, so your plan may combine both.
