Overview

Understanding Birthmarks

Looking for laser birthmark removal in Richmond Hill? We use targeted laser to lighten vascular and pigmented birthmarks, planned by clinicians experienced with these lesions.

Birthmarks fall into two main groups. Vascular birthmarks, such as port-wine stains, are made of extra blood vessels. Pigmented birthmarks, such as café-au-lait macules, contain extra melanin.

Each type needs a different laser approach. We assess the birthmark first, confirm what it is, and plan treatment that targets it while protecting surrounding skin.

Birthmark treatment sits within our cosmetic dermatology services and draws on our medical dermatology expertise. Vascular birthmarks share technology with our redness and vein treatments, while pigmented marks relate to our pigmentation treatment.

What To Expect From Birthmark Treatment

Who it suits, how to prepare, what happens on the day and how results develop.

A good fit if:

  • You have a birthmark you would like to lighten
  • You can commit to a series of sessions
  • You can avoid sun on the area

Talk to us first if:

  • The area is tanned
  • The mark has changed recently (we assess it medically first)
  • A consultation confirms the type of birthmark and sets a plan.
  • No sun-tanning or self-tanners on the area for 4 weeks before treatment, including spray tans, tanning lotions and tanning beds.
  • Use a broad-spectrum (UVA/UVB) SPF 30 or higher every day.
  • Avoid anticoagulants (blood thinners) for 7 days before treatment, if your doctor agrees.
  • Avoid skin irritants such as tretinoin, retinol, benzoyl peroxide, glycolic or salicylic acids and vitamin C for 5 days before treatment, and stop hydroquinone 7 days before.
  • Avoid chemical peels for 2 weeks before treatment, and stop Accutane/Epuris 6 months before.
  • Tell us if you have a history of cold sores; an anti-viral medication may be prescribed.
  • Arrive with the area clean-shaven and free of makeup and lotions.

Treatment feels like quick snaps; cooling or numbing is used to keep you comfortable.

  • The area may be red, swollen or bruised for several days; a ‘bug bite’ look usually settles in 1–2 days.
  • Treated pigment may darken within 24–48 hours before flaking off. Do not pick at the area.
  • Protect the area from sun: avoid sun exposure and tanning, and use SPF 30 or higher every day.
  • Avoid heat for 24–48 hours, including hot tubs, saunas, hot baths or showers and strenuous exercise.
  • Use a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser and avoid skin irritants for 5 days.
  • Blistering is rare; if it happens, apply a thin layer of Vaseline 2–3 times a day for a week and let us know.
  • Consultation: birthmark type confirmed; plan set.
  • Days 1–7: redness, swelling or bruising after each session.
  • Weeks 4–8: next session as the mark lightens.
  • After series: results reviewed; maintenance if needed.

Most birthmarks lighten gradually over a series of treatments. Café-au-lait macules can respond unpredictably and may return, which we discuss before starting.

  • Redness, swelling or bruising for several days
  • Temporary darkening or lightening of skin
  • Café-au-lait macules may come back

We go through the risks for your skin type at your consultation.
