Overview

What Is Laser Hair Removal?

Looking for laser hair removal in Richmond Hill? We offer long-lasting reduction of unwanted hair on the face and body, planned around your hair and skin type.

Laser hair reduction uses light that is absorbed by the pigment in the hair. The heat damages the follicle so it grows back finer, slower or not at all.

Hair grows in cycles and the laser works best on actively growing hair, so a series of sessions is needed. It works best on dark hair.

Laser hair reduction is one of our most-booked cosmetic treatments. If unwanted facial hair is new or sudden, we check for medical causes through our medical dermatology service. Many patients also add IPL for sun spots or Laser Genesis for texture, and our PicoSure Pro tattoo removal uses the same careful skin-typing approach.

Treatment time: 10–60 minutes by area
Downtime: Brief redness
Sessions: Usually 6–8
Results: Gradual after each session

What To Expect From Laser Hair Removal

Who laser hair removal suits, how to prepare, what happens on the day and how results develop.

A good fit if:

  • You have darker hair
  • You are tired of shaving or waxing
  • You can commit to a series of sessions

Talk to us first if:

  • Your hair is white, grey, red or very blond (laser may not work)
  • You have a tan or recent sun exposure
  • You are pregnant
  • Shave the area on the day of your appointment. Do not wax, pluck or remove hair any other way.
  • No sun tanning or self-tanners for 4 weeks before treatment, and use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every day.
  • Avoid skin irritants such as tretinoin, retinol, benzoyl peroxide, glycolic or salicylic acids and vitamin C for 5 days before. Stop hydroquinone 7 days before and chemical peels 2 weeks before.
  • Stop Accutane/Epuris 6 months before treatment, and tell us if you get cold sores; an anti-viral may be prescribed.
  • Arrive with the area clean and free of makeup and lotions.

Each pulse feels like a quick snap, and built-in cooling keeps you comfortable. Small areas take minutes; legs or back take longer.

  • Redness, swelling and small bumps for a few hours are normal. A cool compress (5 minutes on, 10 minutes off) can help.
  • Avoid heat for 24–48 hours, including hot tubs, saunas, hot baths or showers and strenuous exercise.
  • Treated skin burns easily: avoid sun and tanning of any kind, and use SPF 30 or higher daily.
  • Use a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser and avoid skin irritants for 5 days. Do not pick at any blemishes.
  • Blistering or crusting is rare; if it happens, apply Vaseline 2–3 times a day for a week and let us know.
  • Day 0: redness and bumps for a few hours.
  • Weeks 1–3: treated hairs shed.
  • Weeks 4–8: next session as new growth appears.
  • After series: long-term reduction; occasional touch-ups.

Hair reduces a little more after each session. Most patients need 6 to 8 sessions, 4 to 8 weeks apart, then occasional touch-ups. Complete clearance is not guaranteed, as genetics, hormones and some medications can affect results.

  • Redness and bumps around follicles for a few hours
  • Rare: blistering or pigment change, mainly on tanned skin

We go through the risks for your skin type at your consultation.

It gives long-lasting reduction. Most patients need occasional touch-ups.

Most patients need 6 to 8 sessions, spaced 4 to 8 weeks apart, because the laser works best on hair that is actively growing. Occasional touch-ups may be needed after the series.

The laser targets pigment in the hair, so it works best on dark hair. White, grey, red or very blond hair usually responds poorly, and we will tell you honestly at your consultation if laser is unlikely to help.

Each pulse feels like a quick snap, and built-in cooling keeps sessions comfortable. Redness and small bumps usually settle within a few hours.

Yes. Shave the area on the day of your appointment, and do not wax, pluck or use other hair removal methods, as the laser needs the hair in the follicle to work.

Laser hair removal is priced by area and depends on how many sessions you need. We confirm pricing at your consultation and give you a written plan and quote before treatment. Cosmetic treatments are not covered by OHIP.

Laser hair removal can be used on many skin tones when settings are matched to your skin type. Darker or tanned skin has a higher risk of pigment change, so we assess your skin and hair at your consultation and set the treatment accordingly.

You can, but tanned or recently sun-exposed skin has a higher risk of blistering and pigment change. Avoid tanning for 4 weeks before each session, protect treated skin from the sun and use SPF 30 or higher daily.

Because it reduces how much hair grows back, laser hair removal usually reduces ingrown hairs compared with shaving or waxing.

New or sudden facial hair can have hormonal causes such as PCOS, which our medical dermatology team can assess. Laser can reduce facial hair, though hormone-related hair may need more touch-up sessions.
