Overview

Understanding Spider Veins / Leg Veins

Looking for spider vein treatment in Richmond Hill? We use focused laser to fade small red and purple veins on the legs and face, with little downtime.

Spider veins are small red, blue or purple vessels close to the skin’s surface, common on the legs and face. They are usually harmless but can be bothersome.

Focused laser energy heats the vessel so it collapses and is absorbed by the body, without harming the surrounding skin. Larger, bulging varicose veins need a vascular assessment, and we will refer you if that is the case.

Spider vein treatment is part of our cosmetic dermatology services. Facial vessels often respond to Green Genesis or IPL, and redness linked to rosacea is covered on our rosacea treatment page. Larger, painful veins need a vascular assessment, which we can help arrange. Vascular birthmarks such as port-wine stains are covered on our birthmark laser treatment page.

Approach: Vascular laser
Downtime: Little; mild bruising possible
Sessions: A few
Results: Fade over weeks

What To Expect From Spider Vein Treatment

Who it suits, how to prepare, what happens on the day and how results develop.

A good fit if:

  • You have small spider veins on the legs or face
  • You want a needle-free option
  • You can avoid sun on the area

Talk to us first if:

  • You have large, bulging or painful varicose veins (vascular assessment first)
  • The area is tanned
  • You are pregnant
  • No sun-tanning or self-tanners on the area for 4 weeks before treatment, including spray tans, tanning lotions and tanning beds.
  • Use a broad-spectrum (UVA/UVB) SPF 30 or higher every day.
  • Avoid anticoagulants (blood thinners) for 7 days before treatment, if your doctor agrees.
  • Avoid skin irritants such as tretinoin, retinol, benzoyl peroxide, glycolic or salicylic acids and vitamin C for 5 days before treatment, and stop hydroquinone 7 days before.
  • Stop Accutane/Epuris 6 months before treatment.
  • Arrive with the area clean-shaven and free of makeup and lotions.

Each pulse feels like a quick snap with cooling. Treated veins may look darker straight away, which is expected.

  • Mild redness, swelling or bruising can last a few days; a ‘bug bite’ look usually settles in 1–2 days.
  • Avoid heat for 24–48 hours, including hot tubs, saunas, hot baths or showers and strenuous exercise.
  • After leg vein treatment, avoid high-impact activity for 3–5 days. Compression stockings (20–30 mmHg) are optional.
  • Treated skin is sensitive to the sun: avoid sun exposure and tanning, and use SPF 30 or higher every day.
  • Blistering is rare; if it happens, apply a thin layer of Vaseline 2–3 times a day for a week and let us know.
  • Day 0: redness; veins may look darker.
  • Days 1–7: mild bruising settles.
  • Weeks 4–8: veins fade; next session if needed.
  • Ongoing: touch-ups for new veins.

Treated veins fade over several weeks. A few sessions may be needed. New veins can form over time, so occasional touch-ups help.

  • Redness and mild swelling
  • Bruising that settles within days
  • Rare: brown staining after leg vein treatment, which usually fades with time but can take months

We go through the risks for your skin type at your consultation.

Most people need a few sessions, spaced about 4 to 8 weeks apart. The number depends on the area and the number and size of your veins.

Large, bulging or painful varicose veins need a vascular assessment rather than laser. If that is the case, we refer you to a vascular specialist.

There is little downtime. Mild redness, swelling or bruising can last a few days, and most people return to normal activities straight away.

Spider veins are often linked to genetics, hormones, pregnancy, ageing and long periods of standing. On the face, sun exposure and rosacea can also play a part.

Yes. Small vessels around the nose and cheeks often respond well to laser, Green Genesis or IPL. Redness linked to rosacea is covered on our rosacea treatment page.

After leg vein treatment, compression stockings (20 to 30 mmHg) are optional. We let you know if they would help in your case.

Avoid strenuous exercise and heat for 24 to 48 hours. After leg vein treatment, avoid high-impact activity for 3 to 5 days.
